Moving out can be quite an ordeal these days. When you finally manage to buy a house in a locality of your choice, you have to then bother about selling the one you currently live in.

Generally, when a bank forgives a loan (or part of loan), that debt forgiveness is considered income to the borrower.
However, between 2007 and 2012, if that debt is from a principal residence, the first $2 million in debt forgiveness is tax free.
